What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (computerized mapping and analysis) has become one of the hottest areas of interest for students and a highly marketable skill. It is often listed as one of the top recession-proof jobs.

GIS is utilized heavily in several fields, namely cartography, surveying, photogrammetry, urban and regional planning, demographers and social scientists, and in many levels of government.

The new Department of Geography and the Environment offers a BA in Geography, with a concentration in GIS. A BS in Geographic Information Science is planned and is currently under review.
