Accessing GIS Databases

The easiest way to access the GIS databases for Rowan is to use the SDE connection files available on Q:\Database Connections\ and Q:\New Jersey Data\

These are read-only connections that will allow you access to all of the GIS data we have stored locally. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Statewide Parcels (Real property, aka “blocks and lots”)
  • Land Use/Land Cover
  • Political Boundaries
  • Campus Infrastructure

I don’t have a Q drive.

The drive normally mapped as Q within the Geography computer labs is hosted on You can access it by typing in \\\GIS into Windows Explorer. You can map the network share as the Q drive by following these instructions.

I still don’t see the Q drive.

Are you on campus, on a Rowan University owned computer? If the computer is on the domain, you will be granted access to the drive immediately. If you are on a personal computer or laptop, you will need to log in with your Rowan account. Specify your username as ROWANADS\username.

If you are off-campus, you will first need to connect to the campus network using VPN.

Your SDE file is asking me for a username and password.

Unless you have been given a editor privileges by someone from the GeoLab, you should connect using the database-gisuser.sde connection, as that is preconfigured with the read-only account information.

If you are working with the GeoLab on a project where you would like to have editor access to the GIS databases, please contact someone from the GeoLab to have an account created for your project.
